Emmy Nominations

Emmy nominations came out this morning, and they usher in what is truly a changing landscape in primetime television. AMC's Mad Men, and FX's Damages became the first basic cable shows to ever be nominated for best drama series. Mad Men is the drama about life in the advertising business world of the 1950's. The show is beautifully shot, and really makes you feel like you are back in time. It has the look and feel of a premium channel show, and maybe that's because HBO actually was originally going to produce this show and then decided to pass on it. Mad Men led all dramas by being nominated in 16 different categories. NBC's 30 Rock led all comedies with 17 nominations. 30 Rock remains the best show on TV that nobody watches, and quite frankly the Emmys might be all that is keeping it on the air. Last season, when 30 Rock won the Emmy for best comedy series, it was the #102nd watched show on television according to Nielsen. The skyrocketing numbers of cable nominations shows that there is a lot of competition for primetime television today. The big four networks are not the only place to look for primetime television anymore. One last thing to mention would be that Neil Patrick Harris has been nominated for a second straight year for his supporting actor role on my favorite show, How I Met Your Mother. Harris is fantastic as the chauvinistic Barney, and the show would certainly not be the same without him. He has some stiff competition in the category, as he is up against Rainn Wilson (Dwight from The Office) and two of the guys from HBO's Entourage.
